COLOURS OF BARKING
Barking is a multicultural borough on the Eastside of London. A lot of regeneration is taking place already for some time in the area. Among the many changes are new apartments, a new library and an arboretum.
‘Colours of Barking’ is a project about strengthening Barking’s identity by focussing on colour. Although bright colours are applied on new buildings, the feeling of the place remains ‘grey’. Somehow the colours seem to be disconnected from the character of Barking. By spreading the colours on a smaller scale, they become more integrated with the life of Barking’s residents, and thereby with the character of the area.
The project consists of collecting colours, documenting, mapping, rearranging, and creating patterns for fabrics with them. The market is the location from where the rearranged Barking colours can be spread. Through patterns on fabrics the colours can, for example, be worn in cloths or end up in people’s houses in upholstery.
